I’m so pleased with how this tower painting turned out! It has just the right amount of detail for a painting of this size, without getting too distracting. The colours turned out very much as I envisioned them, except that the sky dried a lot paler than I was expecting. It kind of looks as if the edges of the paper drank up all the paint. I’ll have to adjust for that next time.
I’m enjoying using a limited palette lately. I only used Prussian Blue, Maroon Perylene, and Nickel Azo Yellow for this piece. The purple plants in the foreground turned out a bit grey, but overall, the colours are quite harmonious.
I’m going to need a bigger water container if I want to use my quill mop more in the future. It absorbs so much paint that my rinse water is too dirty to continue using by the time I finish a sky wash, despite the fact that my container has three different wells. I also need more absorbent towels than the blue shop towels I’ve been using.
This is the first piece I’ve liked well enough that I would feel comfortable selling it. I’m sure there’s plenty of room for improvement. Hopefully by this time next year my work will have reached a whole new level. Maybe I’ll look back at this and laugh. But for now, I’m starting to believe that I might be able to become the sort of artist I’ve always wanted to be. What a difference good paper makes!
